Reader's Journal #24 2-20-12 Historical Fiction

    Dear World War Veterans,

I have just finished reading Army Boys on German Soil/Our Dough Boys Quelling the Mobs. There are four main characters. Frank, Tom, Bart, and Billy. Frank is the commander of the group. He has a quick mind and fast reflexes. Tom is a fearless soldier. Bart and Billy are brave and all of them are good companions.
One night when the four boys were outside, shots were fired at them. The ducked and saw people going into an ally. They followed, but when they went in they saw none there. One of them turned on a flashlight and shots started firing at them. They ducked and went back to base. They told their Colonel about what happened. Frank wanted to investigate the next day in the morning, but was but on a mission to go get supplies with the 37th.
They went the next day. When they were going up a mountain, it was heavily snowing and to make it worse, Bart fell and sprained his ankle. The Lieutenant said catch up with him later. When they continued they lost there way and ended up at a castle. They rested there with Bart at watch. He heard German voices and woke up his friends. Frank heard that they were making a plan to get back control of the camp the boys were. They arrested them and took their firearms which they were not supposed to have. They left the next day only to find a German squad requesting the hostages. They said no, captured a soldier, and started a firefight. More Germans came in, but the 37th came out the trees and saved the boys. They were greeted with warm faces at the camp.
They returned to hostages to the base, but on the way met on of their friends. A pilot named Dick Lever. They said hi and continued. They when reached the base Frank and Bert investigated the ally. They found a trapdoor in the floor, but could not investigate any further because there was a fire nearby and people would see them. They wanted to see it the next day but there were drills and new regulations. The Lieutenant said they were going to Berlin, and while sweeping the houses Tom got captured. They returned back only three people. When they went to the ally again, they went down the trap door and found many rats attacking them. They retreated up the ladder on the the surface.
Later, they found a American Prison camp and found Tom there. They were going to execute them and told the to dig their own graves. Tom's hands were tired and they cut the string to make him shovel. That was a bad choice because once he got the shovel he hit one of the soldiers then the other. They other prisoners joined in, but the 37th came in guns ablaze. The Germans retreated and Tom was with his comrades again.
When Frank had time he went down the trapdoor again and found a German doctor who hated the Americans. He read the newspaper then threw it on the floor. In the small room had many veils of medicine. The newspaper's headline said mysterious disease kills more Americans. He gets his friends and they told the Lieutenant. H gathered men and place two at the entrance of the ally. The rest went down the trapdoor and found even more Germans. The doctor laughing and boasting that he killed so many Americans, and is planning to kill more. The soldiers burst into the room and arrested everyone.
Later the treaty was signed that ended WWI.

Reader's Journal #23 Historical Fiction 2-13-12

    Dear Holocaust Survivors,

I have finixhed reading the book "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry. This book is about the Jews in WWII and how other people like friends helped them. The book starts with two girls running, Annemarie and Ellen, down a street. Annemarie's little sister, Kisti was being left behind. When the two girls reach the corner, two German soldiers tell them to halt. They ask them questions and laugh at how Kirsti is angry. The let them go and tell them to stop running. They the day after that, Ellen stays over for the night, and her parents are taken away by Peter, Annemarie's almost brother-in-law, but her sister was hit by a car before they could marry. Ellen was a Jew and had to hide from the Nazi soldiers. In the night, soldiers came and asked Annemarie's parents where where were the Rosens, Ellen's family. They went to search the house, but Ellen was wearing a gold necklace with the Star of David on it. Annemarie tore it off before the soldiers found out.
They went to their Uncles house. He owned a boat and since they were in Denmark, they were close to Sweden, a country free from the German occupation. One night many people came to the house and brought a casket. That night Ellen's parents with Peter came back and Ellen was overwhelmed with happiness. They waited, nut Germans came and asked why were there so many people in the house. They said a family member has died, and it is their costom to have the family gathered around the dead person. After they left, Peter lead a few people to the boats where Uncle Henrick was waiting. Before they left,Peter gave Mr. Rosen a package. He said it was very important. He led some of the people out, and then after a midnight, Annemarie's mom lead the Rosens out.Annemarie waited and fell asleep, but when she woke up her mom was still not there. She saw outside her mom on the floor, and when she reached her she said she must have broke her ankle. When Annemarie helped her to the house, she saw the package on the floor. Her mom told her to put the package in a basket under some food and bring it to Uncle Henrick. When she was going, she met some soldiers with dogs. The dogs were traind to sniff people out.The took some bread from the basket gave it to the dogs after they asked her what she was doing. They then saw the package opened it only to find a hanckerchief. They let her go.
When she had reached the boat, Uncle Henrick was relieved. After he came home, he told her that Peter had asked some scientist to come up with a chemical to make dogs lose their sense of smell. They found out a way and put it on a hankerchief.
When the war ended two years later everyone in Denmark was celebrating. All the Jews were moving back into their homes and cheering. Out of this happiness, Peter had died. He was discovered and was in the resistanece. They exucuted him in the square and buried him there.
This story is based on a real story.

Reader's Journal #22 Autobiography 2-7-12 Abandoning

   Dear friends,

I am abandoning Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography. It was very confusing and it kept jumping to different things. One paragraph it was his life, the next it was the publisher's clarification which didn't clarify anything. Another thing that bothered me was that when they were making the book into an eBook, they put in some wrong letters so there were random semicolons, commas, letters, and numbers.
Starting off from where I ended in my last RJ, Benjamin Franklin got a printing job after he found out the one he wanted to do was full. The boss recommended him to another person, Keimer, who I think they became friends but the book wasn't clear. He got the job then quit later because there was a job where they wrote poems and payed more. He became friends with the governor. He said go to London, there is a printing job there that payed more.
When he went to London, he found a job and worked there. He went who his friend who left his wife and two children. He taught kids to read and write in England. Then when Benjamin was going back to Philadelphia, I stopped there. It is page 134 of 422 (A RATIO!).

                                                  Your friend,
                                                  Alexander Yan
