Dear Ethan,
I have finished reading the book I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941 by Lauren Tarshis. This book is a memoir that Mrs. Zhrihen let me read. It is about a boy named Dave who came from New York and settled in Hawaii. His mom made them come here because she wanted Dave to get away from all the crime happening in the city.
One morning, Dave said bye to his mom going to work at the hospital as a nurse near one of the airfields, Hickam. Once she left, Dave heard a rustling outside; he grabbed a bat and went out. Once outside he saw a little Japanese kid with a little boar in his hand. The kid said puppy, puppy and Dave knew he was talking about the boar. He didn't want to hurt his feelings by telling him that was not a puppy, but then a bigger boar came out. He made the kid put down the baby boar before he hurt, and he picked up the now crying kid back into his house.
Once inside he saw the boar go away and the kid's mother come shouting, Aki, her child's name. Dave invited her in and they started to talk about, Aki. She then invited Dave to her house. Then he started to get "emotional" because he started to remember about New York.
The day after that, he woke up to the sound of planes. Aki came shouting planes up the hill separating their houses. Aki's mother came out and told Dave to come into the house and hide, but Dave said no and went to look for his mom. During the time he tried to get to where his mom is, the planes were bombing the harbor and destroying the airplanes before they even started up the engine. They also fired at civilians and bombed the whole area. The whole island was surprised. When Dave got to the hospital where his mom worked, he was relieved to see her. She put him to work instantly. The whole hospital was filled with injured people from the attack. Even the kitchen was filled with people. It took three days until they were done.
In the end all of the main characters survived, but all their lives has changed.

Dear Alexander,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you put the year where this event had happened. That tells the reader when that occasion happened and how long ago it was.
What would you do if attacks were hitting your house, look for your mom, or go with a neighbor for protection?
Which character in the book best describes your personal trait?
Do you think it was worth for Dave and his mother moving to Hawaii after all? Explain.
I suggest you next time conclude all the other elements for our blog not just the plot, so the reader can actually travel through the book vicariously using the seven writing steps.
Besides that, great blog Alexander.
Happy Thanksgiving!:)
Sincerely,
Adi:)
Dear Alexander,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your RJ since it really interested be and it was very well-written. What would you do if you saw the bombing of Pearl Harbor? Where did Aki get a boar? What was your favorite part of this book? Next time, I suggest that you should describe the setting a little bit because anyone who would be reading this RJ would have a clear visualization of the setting.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Jacob Kodner
Dear Alexander,
ReplyDeleteI really liked how your plot was soo descriptive and informative, that you wrote each event accordingly, properly, and orderly. This horrible event caused great harm. It was soo sad and many people got injured. Poor people and Pearl Harbor.
Some questions I have for you are:
What would you do if you were in such a harsh situation?
What personal traits can you share with Dave?
Why did Aki have a boar in the first place?
I suggest that you should include the other elements Mrs.Zrihen asked for. Other than that, Great Job!:)
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Sincerely,
Dore Dadon
Dear Adi,
ReplyDeleteVery good questions. I would go look for my mom in that situation. I think Aki describes my personal traits the best. We are both Asian, and we both seem to enjoy planes a lot. The last answer is, yes. They didn't die for the most part, even though many other people did, and Dave learned something in the end. Nothing stays the same.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try and do that in my next blog. Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving!

Dear Jacob,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment! I would go see if my mom is OK if I saw the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Aki got the boar somewhere while playing. I guess he just picked it up. The book did not explain. It just said a boy with a hideous dog in his hand. My favorite part of this book is when Dave finds his mother. It makes me relieved that everyone is not hurt.
Very good suggestion. I didn't noticed that I didn't explain the setting very well. Thank you! Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving.

Dear Dore,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment and suggestion. I will put the other elements that Mrs. Zrihen asked for in my next blog. I would go look for my mom in such a situation. Some personal traits I can share with Dave are that we are about the same age, and we both will go look for our mom in such a situation. Lastly, Aki had the boar because he just found it. The book doesn't talk about him until Dave sees him with the boar in his hands.
A question I have for you, is that if you took these questions and a suggestion for the other people who commented on this blog, Adi and Jacob? Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving!
