Readers Journal #21 Autobiography 1-30-12

   Dear Historians,

I am reading Benjamin Franklin's autobiography. It has been a little boring so far, but I think it will get better. So far, Benjamin Franklin has been growing up as an apprentice. He was a candle maker at first, then became a printing apprentice to his older brother because his father feared he would go to sea and sail away like his other brother. The printing company was called the Boston Gazette. Benjamin Franklin hated making candles and loved reading and writing. He would buy books with the little money he had, and if there was a good book, he would copy the sentences and see if it looked the same. If it didn't, he'd change it.
When his brother went to jail because he printed something bad about the king, Benjamin took over the company for now. His workers were afraid of him and when he quit to get another job, they told the other newspaper companies do not hire him. He then decided to go to New York and get a printing job there. He first walked to the Harbor in Boston. When they reached the beach of New York, he had to walk more to another town to get a boat to Philadelphia, where he heard there was a printing company. This is where I left off.

RJ #20 Informational 1-24-12

   Dear Daniel,

I have finished reading the book World War II Battles and Leaders. I don't know who the author is, it doesn't say. As you may have figured out this book is about the big battles and important leaders in WWII.
I have found many interesting facts in this book. One of them is that Japan was invading India. I thought the only place in Asia they invaded was China. Also, I didn't know that after Germany made a peace treaty with the Soviet Union, they attacked them for more land. I know the treaty was broken but didn't know how.
An other interesting fact in the book is what the Americans called their strategy in the Pacific to capture the islands. They called it "Island Hopping". They called it this because they would capture islands one at a time. This strategy proved effective because it made the Japanese be on the defensive for most of the war in the Pacific. Also, after the Germans captured France, the soldiers there had to fight with them. So when the American troops came to liberate them, they attacked. I found this interesting because before Germany invaded France, it was on the Allies' side. The American soldiers wore patches with the American flag on it to try to see if the French soldiers would hesitate to fire at them.
Also there were quotes that I found interesting in the book. An example is by the famous Japanese Commander Yamamoto in 1940, "I will run wild and win victory upon victory. But then, if the war continues...I have no expectation of success.". I found this interesting because he said that he will lose if the war continues. He was the one who coordinated the attack on Pearl Harbor.
I hope you found new interesting facts in this RJ.

RJ #19 Sci-Fi 1-16-12

   Dear Future Friends,

I have finished reading the book Atherton Rivers of Fire by Patrick Carman. Starting from where I left off on the last RJ. Edgar, Dr. Kincaid , and Vincent open the door and find Lord Phineus, Samuel, Isabel, and Samual's long lost father, Sir William. Sir William has held Lord Phineus down  source of water by the only source of water found in Atherton. They chat for a while then there was a li and everybody went little earthquake and the water raised incredibly high. Everybody ran to the door and out of the room.
Dr. Kincaid let Vincent hold Lord Phineus down while they moved to a yellow hatch quite a ways down the underground chamber. Lord Phineus said you will never have him and kept saying random things. He once said you will never bring my kingdom into pandemonium , Then Samuel remembered a book he read about a place called pandemonium and remembered the kings name. They put in the name Mulciber and the yellow hatch opened. Then out of nowhere while the people were not paying any attention the crats attacked. They hurried down the hatch but Lord Phineus was bitten. They went down a ladder and found a laboratory. Numbers were everywhere. The kinds went to look at many tools that they had not seen before while the rest dealt with Lord Phineus. Dr. Kincaid said many numbers from the room and Lord Phinues started growing weaker. Dr. Kincaid then slapped him and said that he is Dr. Harding. Dr. Harding was the person who made Atherton but went insane. Lord Phineus or now Dr. Harding got into a chair and talked with Dr. Kincaid, but then the kids came back and sad Edgar was kidnapped by Sir Emerick. Dr. Harding said he will go get him. As he left they took everything they needed from the library and left by a secret door under a table.
While on Atherton everybody from the Highlands escaped the sinking area. The formed a village and move to the other villages to get together and protect themselves from the cleaners. They protected themselves from one wave of them but lost a few people.
Dr. Harding killed Sir Emerick, found Eragon and told him that Atherton was made for him and that Dr. Harding made him. Edgar thought that he was an orphan and had no parents. They slept but when they woke up thee water level has risen from the underground chamber and is rising quickly. He then told Edgar he was not going to make it because of the bit from the Crat and was going to die. He told him there was a boat in a closet for only one person. He escaped and Dr. Harding drowned but was happy he did not die. Edgar escaped and warned the other villages who got together to protect themselves. He said that they must leave for the Flatlands to escape the rising water. They left but the Cleaners found them. The fighters protected the civilians while they escaped. Theygot to the edge of Tabletop but it is caving in. While people used a rope to climb up the rest of the fighters fought and all died but the civilians are okay. But one of the people who were suppose to be watching Edgar saw that he was not there. He was actually rescuing the people who decided to stay on Tabletop and wait for their kids to come back, Samuel and Isabel. Edger rescued them and they restarted their civilization.
Dr. Kincaid, Vincent, Sir William, Samuel, and Isabel were underground and moving through the valleys there. They faces dive-bombing birds that tried to kill you, electrocuting fireflies, rivers of lava, and monstrous eels. They made it but Isabel fainted from being shocked too much from the fireflies. They hurried and reached the surface. Edgar found them and the water stopped rising and the Cleaners evolved into fish-like creatures. I later found out that the bottom half of Atherton was the Dark Planet or Earth.
This book was not the best but is still good. I will rate it 4/5. My favorite part is the end because all the catastrophes have ended. My least favorite part is when Dr. Harding had to die. I recommend this book to anybody.

Title: To Preserve History on the Moon, Visitors are Asked to Tread Lightly
Author: Kenneth Chang
Source: The New York Times

The topic of the article is preserve history on moon.

The main idea of the article is: That a teacher is asked by a student what happens to
the footprint on the moon by the first people on the moon after people started visiting it. The teacher then realized that a piece of human history can be destroyed and tells many corporations including NASA to prohibit people going too close to the lunar lander and the footprints. This is stated.

The author’s purpose for writing this article is to inform the reader about the rules put down by NASA to protect human history.

The author’s perspective in this article is objective/subjective (biased) because subjective because he doesn’t talk about the people wanting to get close to the landing site.

The pattern of organization of the article is

The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is

The text features included in the article are: the title. This helps by letting the reader know what the story is going to be about.

This article is about (a summary in your own words) protecting the historical artifacts on the moon. A teacher, Dr. O’Leary, was asked does federal preservation acts apply to the moon. The teacher then realized that it was important to preotect te human history left there. She and a person named Mr. Donaldson contacted many organizations and all turned her down flatly. Mr. Donaldson thought protecting the artifacts was a great idea.  He checked California’s laws and found that the artifacts had and association with the state to be preserved. Then NASA thought this was a good idea and made a perimeter around the moon where nobody can go. 75 meters from the lander and 225 meters for the Apollo 17 mission.

The significance (importance) of this article is that people are protecting pieces of human history.

What I learned from this article is that people now have to stay away from the Apollo mission landing sites. I also learned about Tranquility Base and that it is on the moon.

What I liked about this article is that it tells now people will preserve the artifacts and things on the moon.
What I did not like about it is that it doesn’t talk about the Apollo Missions. It would be helpful to those who don’t know about it.

Who should read this article and why Everybody should read this article because it talks about the preservation of human history.

This article reminds me of (text-to-self) the pictures I saw online of Earth taken from the moon.
(text-to-text) I can relate this to the newspaper article about travel to space with travel insurance because both related to rich people going to space.
(text-to-world) I can relate this to the world because this is actually real. People are preserving the things on the moon.

RJ #18 Science Fiction

   Dear Mia,

I am almost halfway done withe the book Antherton Rivers of Fire by Patrick Carmen. This is the the second book in the series so it might sound confusing. The main characters are Isabel, Samuel, Edgar, Dr Kincaid, Vincent, Sir Emerick, and Lord Phineus. The setting is in Antherton. This place is half of the Earth. What I mean by that is that there is only half of the Earth, like half a ball. The place was created as a refuge for the dying Earth, but very few people know that. There are also not many materials like metal and gold that we take for granted today. Their weapons are rocks, slings, and wooden spears.
There are three lands, the Flatlands at the bottom, Tabletop at the middle, and the Highlands at the top. The Highlands were where all the people who served Lord Phineus lived and had the only source of water, Tabletop is were all the farmers live, and the Flatlands had creatures called cleaners living there. They ate only meat and if could not find any, would eat each other. The three lands were separated by three tall cliffs, but the Highlands are slowly caving in and going into Antherton, and Tabletop is slowly falling to the Flatlands.
Edgar just came back from the Flatlands learning the Antherton is slowly caving in. He is an experienced climber and is friends with Dr. Kincaid and his bodyguard, Vincent. After they tell the villages that there is a danger because of the Cleaners, they head to the now very deep Highlands. Isabel and Samual are already inside this secret chamber where the water source is. The secret chamber is called Mead's Hollow. Edgar and the group climb down and then go into the hallow they find Sir Emerick being chased by crats. Half cat half rat animal. Vincent uses a whip to scare them away but Sir Emerick is already bitten. Sir Emerick has an ambition to become Lord of Antherton.  He said that there are four people inside room and is now Lord because Lord Phineus is one of the people in the room ( it is locked). Lord Phenius is more like a dictator and has control over the water. They move slowly to the door and this is where I left off.
So far the book is good but I don't know until I finish reading it.

Title: Booking a Flight to Space, With Travel Insurance
Author: Kenneth Chang
Source: __________
The topic of the article is booking flights to space

The main idea of the article is: You can now book flights to space but for a hefty payment like over 15,000 dollars just for a seat. You can also add travel insurance to your trip. Now this increases the people going to space because it is now more affordable.  This is stated.

The author’s purpose for writing this article is to inform the reader that you can now travel to space like you would travel in an airplane.

The author’s perspective in this article is objective because it doesn’t talk about his or her opinions.

The pattern of organization of the article is flashback. It says you can go to space the same why you book a flight and it gives an example from the past.

The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is because it helps make the article clearer. It says you can book a flight to space, and then it gives an example of someone booking a flight to space.

The text features included in the article are: quotes. They help by telling the reader how the costumers feel about this type of “trip”. Another feature are the details, they help by making the article clearer. The last text feature is the title. It tells what the story is going to be about.

This article is about (a summary in your own words) going to space like how you would book an airplane flight. You can also get travel insurance for the flight, too. There are many companies that do this, but the most talked about in the article is Virgin Galactic. The trip is two hours and a half. Once in space or suborbital, you can move around it the cabin and take pictures with the curvature of the Earth in the background.

The significance (importance) of this article is that it now shows that technology has advanced so much, that now even the little more wealthier general public can go into space.

What I learned from this article is that you can book flights into space like you would with an airplane trip.

What I liked about this article is that it is very informative and that it provided details to support the main idea. Also it used superb vocabulary words like jaunt.

What I did not like about it is nothing. It is well written and does not add or leave out any unneeded or important information.

Who should read this article and why people who have dreamed to go to space should read this. I think this because now it informs them that they could.

This article reminds me of (text-to-self) when I wanted to see space when I was little.
(text-to-text) This reminds me of the biography I read for summer reading, Ilan Ramon a Shining Star. It reminds me of this because he was an astronaut.
(text-to-world) This reminds me of the movie Despicable Me because the main character wanted to become an astronaut.

New vocabulary I learned
Word Context Clues Meaning
1. jaunt: rocket ship it has built, featuring five minutes of weightlessness during a two-and-a-half hour jaunt. Meaning: trip
2. grandiosity: “Hopefully by next Christmas, myself, my daughter and my son will be the first people to go up into space” on a commercial craft, Richard Branson, the owner of Virgin Galactic, said in a videotaped interview in November (with a touch of his signature grandiosity). Meaning: kindness
3. albeit: For Ms. Culver, the Virgin flight will fulfill a dream, albeit an expensive one. Meaning: although

RJ #17 1-2-12

    Dear Reader,

I have finished reading the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It is a great book and recommend it for everybody. In the beginning it talks about a boy named Harry in England and is eating dinner with his hated family. They are the Dursleys. Harry is a wizard, but the Dursleys don't like anything abnormal. When Mr. Vernon Dursley said that a visitor was coming for his job he told Harry to stay in his room and not make a sound. When Harry was in the room he saw a little elf named Dobby. It told Harry to not go to Hogwarts this year because of great danger. Hogwarts is the famous Witchcraft and Wizardry school. Harry said no but Dobby went out the room and caused a ruckus in the dinning room where the Dursleys were. They thought it was Harry and made him clean up the mess. Then an owl came in and scared one of the visitors. Mr. Dursley read the note it brought and glared at Harry. He showed him the letter and it said don't use magic again or you will be expelled from the school. The Dursleys did not know he was not allowed to use magic and locked him in his room and barred his window because they know he cannot use magic and come back out.
One night he was dreaming and he heard something. He looked out his window and there was his friend Ron floating in a car. Ron tied the car to the window and put pedal to the metal and broke the window. His two twin brothers, Fred and George, came and lock picked his room door. They went to get his stuff while Harry put things he needed into the car. When they were about to leave Harry forgot his owl and went to retrieve it but Mr. Vernon saw him and yelled he was escaping grabbed his ankle but Fred and George managed to pull him into the car. The flew to an lopsided looking house and then Mrs. Weasley saw them and started yelling at them because they were not suppose to have the flying car. Then she saw Harry and greeted him warmly. Harry had a great time in the house and met Ginny, who is a fan of Harry because he made the evil wizard Voldemort disappear when he was just a baby.
Harry was at school for a while when he saw that the care taker's cat, Ms. Norris, petrified. Harry was the first there and when everybody came they pointed at Harry for doing the crime. Also on the wall their was blood and it spelled out something like the Chamber of Secrets has been opened by the Heir of Slytherin. Slytherin is a house or group in the school for people who have all wizards or witches in their family. Then came more attacks. Harry found a diary in the toilet and wrote in it and it wrote back. Then it showed 50 years ago when the person who owned the book, Tom Riddle, was in Hogwarts. He blamed Hagrid and that is how he got expelled when he was in Hogwarts. He secretly owned a big spider.
He was also one of Harry's friends, and was about to be sent to jail, but before he left he said follow the spiders. Harry and Ron followed the spiders (Even though Ron is terrified of them.) and they found a huge spider that told them that what was attacking the school was feared by them and would not say its name. One day,  one of Harry's best friends, Hermione was attacked. They found in her hand a couple days later a piece of paper torn out of a library book. They found out that it was a basilisk that was petrifying everyone.
They went to a ghost to see if the basilisk killed her. Her name was Moaning Myrtle and was easily offended. They found out how to get in with one of their teachers and when they went in the teacher tried to take all the fame and used a memory charm with Ron's warn but it backfired because it was broken. The ceiling crumbled and Harry and Ron were on opposite sides. Harry went in and found Ginny on the floor. He tried to rescue her but then saw Tom with his wand. He called the basilisk but then a Phoenix of the headmaster, Dumbledore, came with the sorting hat, a hat the puts you in a house. In the hat there was a sword. The phoenix was attacking the basilisk and then it bit Harry. The Phoenix cried and the tears healed Harry's wounds. Harry then took the tooth that was in his arm and stabbed the diary with it.
My favorite part of the book was the end because it was the most interesting and detailed. My least favorite part of the book was when Hermione got petrified. I rated this book 5/5 because of the great imagination and quality in it.

                                                                   Sincerely,
                                                                   Alexander Yan
